PROTECTED SITES IN TERMS OF THE NATIONAL HERITAGE ACT, Act no. 25 of 1999

The following are the most important sites and objects protected by the National Heritage Act:

  • Archaeological sites and objects
  • Structures or parts of structures older than 60 years
  • Paleontological sites
  • Meteorites
  • Ship wrecks
  • Burial grounds
  • Graves of victims of conflict
  • Public monuments and memorials
  • Structures, places and objects protected through the publication of notices in the Gazette and Provincial Gazette
  • Any other places or object which are considered to be of interest or of historical or cultural significance
  • Geological sites of scientific or cultural importance
  • Sites of significance relating to the history of slavery in South Africa
  • Objects to which oral traditions are attached
  • Sites of cultural significance or other value to a community or pattern of South African history

CULTURAL HERITAGE IMPACT ASSESSMENTS

Both the National Heritage Resources Act No. 25 of 1999 and the National Environmental Management Act No. 107 of 1999 make it compulsory for developers to do a Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment. These assessments have to be multi disciplinary and should include Archaeology, Cultural History, Architectural History and Oral History as well as Palaeontology.

PRIME PROJECTS

  • Documenting and evaluating of monuments and memorials in the Pretoria CBD for the South African Heritage Resources Agency. This included a public workshop as well as recommendations for a new policy on South African monuments and memorials.
  • Documenting of cultural heritage resources in the North West Province for the South African Heritage Resources Agency. This included the mapping of over four thousand sites as well as recommendations on conservation and protection procedures.
  • Impact assessment of the proposed new Dinokeng conservation area north east of Pretoria for the Gauteng Government.
  • Documentation of four hundred and seventy archaeological sites on the farm Hoekfontein.
  • Research and documentation of Venda legends, believes and other cultural phenomena for the development of a truly African Museum at Dzata.
  • Documentation of the cultural heritage resources of Sekhukhuneland and the development of the Tjate Valley.
  • Development of the Thomo Heritage Park’s, Cultural Village.
